Hemorrhoids are caused by pulling on anal tissue by hard stool. This is largely due to the lack of fiber in our diets. It is manifest by bleeding and pain. The bleeding is usually bright red, seen after bowel movements, and can be seen on the toilet tissue or toilet water. You may feel the hemorrhoid tissue protruding on straining.

Do not assume bleeding is from hemorrhoids. Consult your doctor to properly work you up and rule out other causes of rectal bleeding.
Treatment for hemorrhoids usually starts with increasing fiber in your diet and using sitz baths. If symptoms persist I can use a heating device to "dry up" the hemorrhoids. This is done in my office.

Surgical treatment is excision of the hemorrhoid tissue under general anesthesia. This is an outpatient procedure. Recovery lasts approximately three weeks. I can discuss the options with you.
